INDIGO is a novel application of existing technology. Comparable devices (such a dark glasses with flashing red LEDs inside) exist in research laboratories at the University of Washington, USA and the University of Iberoamericana, Mexico. These devices are research tools and have not been clinically trailed or commercialised.
As an IT aid, INDIGO is remarkable in that it has broken new ground in the effectiveness and simplicity of application of virtual reality. The social contribution of this system is to offer a small section of the EU population dramatic increases in freedom and quality of life which no other IT application can offer.
People with PD can use INDIGO at different stages of the disease evolution. The product ideally benefits patients in Hoehn-Yarn stages of the disease II and III; however, trial evidence indicates that even patients in stage IV may benefit (RE. Each year the PARKAID system will result in fewer injuries and deaths from falling as people with PD struggle to move.
PARKAID vision is to use state-of-the-art technology to improve the quality of daily life for people with disabilities, mainly focussing on Parkinson's disease (PD). To achieve this vision, PARKAID have develop INDIGO for patients for use alongside conventional treatment combinations of drug therapies, hospitalization, deep brain stimulation and physiotherapy techniques.
